Review of Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade

BUYER BEWARE

On the surface, Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade looks like a great lead engineer. It seems he could lead any Ruby on Rails development team and complete a well developed Ruby on Rails app.

Let’s break things down.

Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade Work Ethic

For three months, Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade was committing FRAUD. He was charging us his hourly rate to run checks on software we paid him to write (we owned) and on our servers. This script was supposed to be on a cron job. Stephen was running checks on our software and screen captured them and charging us for it. He wasn’t writing any code.

As soon as we pointed this out to him, we didn’t hear anything back from him for weeks. Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade disappeared off the face of the planet for a month. When he reemerged, Stephen never addressed the issue. I believe I’m a reasonable person. I would have taken hours he defrauded us and applied them to new hours where he was writing code.

Still to this day, he hasn’t addressed the issue.

Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade Communication Style

Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade didn’t communicate via daily stand-ups or weekly calls. We had weekly calls scheduled, and he only showed up for 1 of them out of the entire nine months working with us. Not once was he proactive about communication over the phone or daily stand-ups.

We communicated with him via email and slack. In software development, this is fine if you are doing daily or weekly standups. In the end, the project fell way behind. We were even nudging him and letting him know we had to answer to investors.

Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade Leadership

Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade promised he could lead a team and is a fantastic Scrum master. We hired 4 Ruby devs and all quit under his leadership because he couldn’t give them tasks to do.

This three months project went on for nine months and is still not complete. I realize my big mistake in all of this was letting it go on for too long. I’m sure I wasn’t perfect either, but if the communication doesn’t exist then, it’s hard to get anything done.

In the end, I think Stephen Advincula aka sylv3rblade defrauded us in about $10,000.

Don’t hire this guy. Ever. He’s just a hustler who will rip you off. What he did to us was completely short sided.
